: I'm not knocking the Alliance, but they have to remember that they are a minor power compared with the other two. If they forget this they could end up in trouble.

But you can't ignore a strategic position...

Firstly, the Alliance has no wish to initiate hostilities with any other force, and isn't actually going to _start_ any fights.

But...the Alliance *does* have a purely professional defence force. This counts for a lot. The Imps/Feds might have huge numbers, but a lot of it is half-rate mercenary forces that Jannah Berihn alludes to.

Back to that strategic position. As you have observed, the Empire are just too remote - their supply lines would get overstretched. They've never managed to hold onto any system in this part of the galaxy for long - they lost Alioth to a bunch of rebels and they had the help of the Feds back then too. Of course, the Veliaze thing gave us an awful fright, and that's why we *have* got this professional force.

The Federation. Federation public opinion woudn't stomach agression against the Alliance, since most Alliance systems are trading partners, in most of the Federation's population's eyes. Therefore, any Fed attack is likely to be half-hearted, and public concern back home would soon cause the Feds problems. The Fed population can stomach actions against the Empire - the Empire is seen as a bunch of evil opressors. But if the Feds open up on us...the population at large will not stomach it, since it will be like killing your favorite brother.

How about the Feds and Imps together? Well, their mutual hatred for each other is such that any attempt is doomed to failure. They tried with Phekda, but that crumbled pretty quickly. The Feds did try and push it, but fortunately good sense prevailed, and the aforementioned concern at home picked up - and they backed off.

Of course - we'd never like to test these theories out! We are trying to spread peace and harmony - that's why new systems want to join the AIS.

In a pack of wolves, we might be the smallest...but because of this, we've made sure we have got the sharpest claws and teeth!

: : Oi! You might end up paying for that remark!

: Sounding a bit Imperial here. :-)

Well - not really. It's just we are proud of the AJN, so anyone knocks it will get a sarky reply!
